Why I raped, killed corps member –Driving instructor
A driving school instructor, Festus Udoh, yesterday narrated how he raped and killed a serving female member of the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) in Ogun State. The 29-year-old suspect, who hails from Uromi in Edo State, said he lured the corps member, Modupe Tawose, into a thick bush under the guise of delivering her learner’s permit. Udoh, who committed the crime on Saturday at Abule Ayo area of Mawuko in Odeda Local Government Area of the state, was arrested barely24hoursafterbypolice detectives.
The state Commissioner of Police, Ahmed Iliyasu, who paraded the suspect at the crime scene yesterday, said Udoh deceived the 23-year-old corps member before raping and strangulating her. Until the incident, the suspect was a driving trainer who tutored the deceased at an Abeokuta-based driving school. However, luck ran out ont him when the colleagues of the deceased raised the alarm over her disappearance. Also, the suspect’s passport photographs were found at the crime scene, thus confirming his culpability. Speaking with New Telegraph, Udoh, who disclosed that he had separated from his wife, said he committed the crime about 5p.m. on Saturday.
The suspect claimed that the corps member’s threat to spill the bean after having unlawful carnal knowledge of her forced him to ‘silence’ her He said: “I asked her to come to Lafenwa to collect the learner’s permit promising that I will do another one for her. She came to Lafenwa and I told her to follow me to the place where I will do it for her.
“We boarded cab from Lafenwa to Iberekodo and we were discussing as she followed me. She was suspicious and asked me if it was the place and answered her that this is the place I stay, she followed me and as we reached here, I told her I wanted to have sex with her but she said ‘no.’
“But I insisted on having sex with her. She refused and I dragged her into the bush and had sex with her. After the sex, she threatened to report to her family and I also threatened her. I then tore her clothes and I tied her neck. As she was gasping for breath, I left and fled the scene.
“The following day in the afternoon, her colleagues were already looking for her and they called my former boss who also summoned me to come and see him in front of a church. When I got there, I saw people gathered. From there, I was dragged into a waiting vehicle and taken to Lafenwa police station.”
The suspect explained that he confessed to the crime while in custody of the Anti-Kidnapping and Anti-Cultism unit of the police command. Speaking with journalists, Iliyasu said the police received formal complaint on December 12 from the NYSC State Coordinator, John Okpo, about the disappearance of a Batch A corps member on December 10. He said: “We, through technical intelligence and information, were able to verify some information with the person she had her last contact with.
“Technically, the information led to one person by name Festus Udoh, an indigene of Uromi in Edo State, who was teaching this innocent deceased corps member how to drive. She enlistedwithhiminadriving school, Lizzy Driving School, in Abeokuta.
“The man tactically and deceitfully convinced her on the fateful day that her driving permit was ready. She decided to answer to his call and he cleverly and deceitfully apprehended this lady and brought her down to this area, Mawuko, in this forest and had a forceful, illegal carnal knowledge of her at the end of which he strangled her and killed her.”
Iliyasu said the police had notified the NYSC authorities and family of the deceased about the incident. He advised Nigerians to be security-conscious and always analyse phone calls before responding to such.
