Students of Benue state university Makurdi in the early hours of Monday 21st may 2018 sealed the school’s main gate to protest against the recent increment in school fees by the school.
As reported, the increment which came as a result of the state’s government declaration that there was no money to fund the university and that the university should generate revenue by itself to run its affairs was outrightly rejected by the students.
The increment has led some newly admitted students to forfeit their admissions as the new rate cannot be afforded by their parents.
In a statement, one of the protesters who pleaded anonymity expressed his disappointment over the increment, stating that in a state where civil servants are being owed up to eleven (11) months salaries and farmers are being killed & displaced from their homes as a result of incessant Fulani attacks, the increment at such a time is totally unacceptable by the average Benue citizen.
The students who came out in their numbers carrying placards with several inscriptions and singing solidarity songs blocked the school’s main gate & the highway so travellers and people plying the road can feel their pains.
As at the time of this report, the school management is yet to comment on the protest.
